ADHD

Misbehaving Boy

Students need to find a famous celebrity or athlete that has ADHD. You need to analysis their childhood and their history with the disorder. Include when they were diagnosed, their signs and symptoms, their struggles with the disorder over time and today. Also, look to see if  they self-medicated with drugs or alcohol.  Please post on the blog site. Do not copy each other. I will know. Due Thursday at 11:59pm. I will not take late posts.

  1. ADHD is an attention deficit disorder, and it affects thousands of people in the world today. Some of the symptoms include hyperactivity and impulsiveness. One person affected in particular is the actor Jim Carrey. As a student in school, Carrey was very restless. He was also known as, of course, the class clown. He used to receive notes on his report cards saying that he was always the first one done with an assignment, but that he would then disrupt all of the other students while they tried to finish their tasks. Sometimes, though, his teachers would even allow him to perform stand--up comedy for the other students at the end of the day, so that he could release some of his energy. Carrey has been treated for his disorder since a child, although there is unfortunately no cure for the disease. Carrey is very open about his disorder, and even uses some of the symptoms to his advantage. He is able to combine his creativity and the energy that comes with the disorder to perform his best comedic acts, although he is not able to focus on one piece for an extended period of time. He has many restless nights, but it is said that Carrey no longer takes any type of stimulants to help with his ADHD; he does not even drink coffee. There is nothing found about him self-medicating with drugs and/or alcohol.

  3. One person who sufferes with ADHD is game show host, actor, and comedian Howie Mandel. Growing up, Mandel was very impulsive. He could not focus his attention or listen intently to one thing for any length of time. He claims that he spent more time in the school office than in the classroom. To get attention, he claimed one time he threw a candy bar into a pool to appear like someone used the bathroom in the pool, only to jump in the water and come up with the candy bar in his mouth when the whole school had gathered around, in order to get attention. He also suffered from OCD and had few friends as a child. He claimed he was simply a spectacle. He did not end up graduating from high school, though his parents were supportive of him. When he was growing up in the 1960's, ADHD and OCD were unknown; and it was not until Howie was an adult that he was diagnosed with both disorders. He says his current treaments for his conditions are medication and psychotherapy, though he will not go into the details about both to avoid creating an illusion of a 'quick-fix' solution to ADHD and OCD. He has never admitted to having self-medicated in the past. Occupation-wise, Mandel started out as a carpet salesman because of his impulsive nature but ended up finding a great career in stand-up comedy, something vastly different from the classroom enviornment where he did not succeed. Mandel to this day is still very impulsive and constantly moving, and he praises his wife and family for being patient with him. His wife has trouble having conversations with him though, and they have had to go to therapy together to help with these issues. His imuplsiveness led to his revealing of his having OCD on a talk show to the public. He sees no goodness in his disorder and says that medication is what keeps him reasonably under control.

  4. Howard Michael Mendel is a celebrated tv host, who suffers from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Howie’s ADHD has affected him as long as he can remember. It most affected him in school as a child. Nevertheless not ever earning his high school diploma due to the ADHD he says he never left any less loved by his parents. To this day the disorder is still affecting him even in his marriage. He says in an article on additutemag.com that his wife has learned how to deal with him. He said that every conversation with his wife usually includes the phrase, “HOWIE, HOWIE, are you paying attention?”. His signs and symptoms started as a kid when he was unable to focus during school. Instead of focusing on school work he and his teachers found him starting into space or distracting other students with side conversations. Though signs were evident when he and family members look back, Howie was first diagnosed with ADHD when he was already and adult. As far as I observed online, Howie has not used many drugs or alcohol to subdue his disorder due to the fact that he was diagnosed at a late age.

  5. ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) affects many children and adults in today’s world. One person with ADHD is the famous chef Jamie Oliver. He was diagnosed in his early childhood. As a kid he struggled in school. He had issues paying attention and his grades suffered from it. He also suffered with obesity as a child. He is from the UK and his parents were restaurant owners. He used all his energy in becoming a great chef. Cooking calmed him down and kept him busy. He began eating a high protein diet and cooking became his strength in over coming ADHD. He believes that the disorder can come from an unhealthy diet. He has launched a program for schools to give kids healthy meals. He is now committed to bringing awareness to a healthy diet starting at childhood. He believes cutting out junk food is the best way to avoid disorders like ADHD and to stay healthy. He used a healthy diet and his passion for cooking to treat his disorder. Oliver did not use any drugs or alcohol to cope with the disorder.

  6. Roxy Olin is an actress who appeared on the MTV Reality Shows called “The City” and “The Hills.” She also has a continuing role in the TV show called “Brothers and Sisters.” Roxy was a very active child who was constantly getting into trouble. She had a hard time in school and was easily distracted, especially when she took tests. When she was in third grade, her parents took her to a doctor and she was given Ritalin to help her concentrate. That medicine didn’t agree with her, so her parents tried to control her behavior without medicine, using vitamins and exercise. When Roxy was a teenager, she was diagnosed with ADHD and given the medicine called Adderol. Roxy started using drugs when she was 15. She became addicted to cocaine and Oxycotin. After several car crashes, her parents sent her to a drug rehabilitation program when she was 18. When she came home, she continued using drugs and had to go back to rehab. This program didn’t allow patients to take any drugs, including Adderol. Her rehab therapist had ADHD himself and worked it out so she could take that medicine while still in the program. Her therapist understood because he had ADHD himself. He taught her techniques for staying organized and managing her time that she still uses in her acting jobs today.

  7. Bill Cosby is one of the most famous Comedians of all time; He is one of the last great comedians that does not center his humor on vulgarity and foul language. While he is a household name, many do not realize that a great portion of his success came about because of his struggle with ADHD. Bill Cosby was always known as the class clown in whatever school he went to, however, because he was so focused on making people laugh, his grades always suffered, and he got into trouble constantly. This forced Bill to jump from one school to the next, never staying for very long. While Bill was clearly suffering from ADHD, he never took the medicine to calm him down, His exuberant energy and his love for making people laugh is what made him the legend he is today. In addition, while many of those suffering from ADHD look to self-medicate and do illegal drugs to balance themselves out, Bill never did. In fact, he overtly discouraged drug use and has been a known advocate for stopping the use of illegal drugs. Bill found his outlet of comedy to help him deal with his disability, and in fact, without that so called Disability, he never would have become the great Comedian he is today.

  8. Many people suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or ADHD. Vince Vaughn is a famous actor that suffers from this disorder. He was the youngest of three children, and the only boy in the family. Growing up, Vince attended school, but had trouble with both reading and paying attention. His school insisted that he be given medication for ADHD, but his father refused to believe that Vince had ADHD. Not only does he suffer from ADHD, but also Dyslexia. These disorders made it difficult for him to keep up in school. He was put in special classes for kids with learning disabilities, but this upset him because he felt embarrassed. In 1987, one year before Vince graduated from Lake Forest High School, he made the decision to become an actor. Vince credits his father’s refusal to put him on medication to his success. He believes that by being forced to deal with his Dyslexia and ADHD he had to work harder than his peers both in and out of school. He had a stronger work ethic than his peers due to his disabilities. He believes that it doesn’t matter what you are diagnosed with, but if you are willing to work harder in order to achieve. He believes that he succeeds because of his disabilities. Vince also believes that if it was not for his ADHD and Dyslexia, he wouldn't be where he is today.

  9. Howie Mandel grew up very impulsive and a trouble maker at school. He did not know until the last decade, as an adult, that there was a name for what he had. He has been and is very unfocused in all aspects of life. It is hard for him to sit and read a script or book, or even have a conversation. He was expelled from high school and realized that it was not his thing and did not return. He never got his diploma. His humor and sporadic attitude has allowed him to land on his feet and be successful but he still struggles with paying attention and sitting still. These attributes are perfect for his job, although sometimes he has to work hard to control his behaviors. Howie speaks out for a PSA campaign that encourages treatment for his disease, ADHD. He wants to help everyone who is going through what he has had to struggle with for all of his life. When talking to his kids and wife, he often drifts off and they have to ask him if he is listening to them. His parents were always supportive of him, but it was not always easy. Howie does not talk publicly about what medication he takes. However, he says that there is help for anyone and everyone that needs it. On top of ADHD, he also has OCD. They help define who he is but they are not always easy to handle. Although he copes with these conditions, he said that “given a chance, I would gladly return it.”

  10. There are many people out there who have the disorder known as ADHD. It is a neurobehavioral disorder that causes many problems; some being lack of attention, hyperactivity, and impulsiveness. It makes it difficult for people to learn and concentrate. A famous person who has this disorder is the famous singer/actor Justin Timberlake. He was diagnosed with ADHD as a child. OCD is co-morbid with ADHD, which is another disorder that was present in his childhood. This added extra pressure and stress to his life. In order to live with it, he claimed that laughter played a big part in dealing with the disorders. He quoted, “My earliest memories as a kid was I would always try to make my mom and my stepdad laugh at dinner. Or make my friends laugh in class. And I don't know, it’s something I just really enjoy doing.” He claims that he has always struggled with stress, but he deals with it by using humor to calm his mind.
The person he looked up to a child, his role model, was Michael Jordan, who also suffers from ADHD. He believed that the disorder is what made Jordan into a great basketball player, so he used him as an example and believed he could use the disorder to his advantage. He believes that his ADHD is what shaped him into what he is today and he never could have gotten where he is today without it. He also admits to self medicating with drugs, such as pot. He claimed, “The only thing pot does for me is it gets me to stop thinking. Sometimes I have a brain that needs to be turned off. Some people are just better high.”
Although he has both ADHD and OCD, it is evident that it has not stopped him from achieving anything in life. He is an example. He is proof that it is not impossible for people suffering with ADHD to live a normal, successful life.

  11. ADHD is a disorder that affects people all around the world. ADHD is also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Many people have this disorder and go through many hardships. Ty Pennington, host of the "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" is a victim of ADHD. Tyler's disorder began when he was young in school and his hyperactivity would get in the way of everything he did. He spent most of his time in detention. In class, Ty remembers that he always ran around the classroom, swung on the blinds, and playfully slapped other students on the back of the head. School was one of the hardest times for Ty Pennington because of his ADHD. Other symptoms and hardships included Ty not being able to remember a word from a book he had recently read. He caused chaos most of the time and he spent most of his time being disciplined rather than learning. At the age of 17, right before college, Ty was diagnosed with ADHD. ADHD affected Ty in many ways such as his confidence and belief in himself but he still found a talent in him which concluded of art, design, and carpentry. Soon after, a modeling scout helped Ty start his career in TV and advertisements. His humor and appearance was attractive and with his carpentry skills he was able to start his own television show, Home Makeovers. When Ty was younger they put him on antihistamines but it didn't really help much. Ty still has some aspects of hyperactivity and he also experiences distractibility and impulsivity. Ty gets help and he says medication has helped. He sees a psychiatrist and takes small doses of medication. Although he is older and can handle the disorder better he still suffers hardships such as relationships. It is hard for Ty to get into a serious relationship because he can't really communicate. He can't pay attention to what someone says and he just forgets it right away. This makes the other person feel as if Ty doesn't care about what they have to say and it affects his relationship with people at his home and his work.

  12. With a hefty 19 Olympic medals and the title of “The Greatest Olympian in History”, Michael Phelps is one of the great success stories of Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder (ADHD). Phelps was diagnosed with this disease at the age of 9. His mother says that he had a hard time focusing in a work environment like school, could never sit still, and talked nonstop. Before he was diagnosed with ADHD, he began swimming at 7 years old. The pool became his home as he excelled at the sport. It was his outlet to burn off all the excess energy he had from long days at school. He was put on a stimulant medication to help him in school, but his mother only gave it to him on Monday-Friday. She never gave it to him on weekends or on holidays. As his ability in the pool increased, he swam every day, no excuses. He even swam on Christmas and on his birthday. According to Michael, he hasn’t self medicated. He was caught smoking pot in a picture that went viral between the Beijing and London Olympics, but that was un-related to his disorder.

  13. Many people around the world have a disorder called Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This disorder affects people by making them very hyper and they also have trouble concentrating. We may think its perfectly normal for a regular child to have ADHD but we often look past celebrities to have anything thing wrong with them. Jim Carrey is a world famous comedian and has been in tons of movies such has "The Mask", "Dumb and Dumber", and "Yes Man". What most people don't know is that he suffers from ADHD. Since Jim was little he has always been the class clown of his home and school. ADHD may be a curse on some people but for Jim it was like a gift. Most of his characters that he plays are all very odd, hyper, and well, bouncing off the walls. His ADHD helped his characters take on a whole knew life. Jim says that he is "hard to live with" because of his ADHD. He has said that he is like a "caged animal" that's up all night walking around the house. Also, with being so many different characters and being able to let his ADHD side loose is it hard for him to come back down to his calmer self. Jim Carrey does not self medicate himself in anyway for his ADHD.

  14. Will Smith as a child was considered to be the fun one in class but had trouble paying attention. His charming personality and quick tongue helped him out of trouble, a trait for which gave him the nickname "Prince", which later on fit his acting career as "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air". His smooth talk also helped play with the movie "Hitch". He used his challenge to his advantage in school and in his acting career. To him, ADHD was not considered a disability, but a gift. He uses his ADHD to always be working and getting the job done. He says that in school he was a B student but should have been an A student because he could not focus as well as the other kids (underachievement). They have diagnosed him as a child with ADHD. He had trouble reading a full book in two weeks. Nowadays, when he get's a book he has someone read it to him on tape. He never took anything to deal with his ADHD because it was not a struggle for him.

  15. Micheal Phelps is one of Americans greatest athletes and swimmers; he has received an over all of 22 medals during his Olympic career. Micheal was diagnosed with ADHD when he was in the sixth grade. His teachers said that he would always fidget and had a difficult time focusing in the classroom. Phelps was then put on Ritalin for a few years and it seemed to be helping him; however when he was 13 years old he decided that he no longer wanted to take his medicine, so with the help of his doctor he slowly weened himself off of the drug. Micheal believed that his mind was his greatest tool and he could teach himself how to focus. His teachers use to tell him that he would never amount to anything due to his disorder but Phelps knew he could do anything he put his mind to. Phelps once said in an interview, “Your mind is the strongest medicine you can have...You can overcome anything if you think you can and you want to.” Micheal needed an outlet for his energy and he found that through swimming. Micheal became very dedicated to swimming and used all his extra energy and his natural abilities to become the most decorated Olympian in the world. When Micheal was younger he was teased by the other kids when he had to leave class to take his medicine or he could not sit still in class but Micheal never let these things mess with him. Micheal's mom said that swimming was one of the main reasons his disorder did not hold him back because it gave him the constant praise and positive reinforcement someone with ADHD needs.

  16. Many children suffer from Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). ADHD is one of the most commonly diagnosed disorders in America today, occurring in about every 3-5 kids. ADHD can make it very difficult for a child to do well in school, making it hard for them to make it somewhere in life. However, despite popular belief, many celebrities who have accomplished great things suffer from ADHD. For example, actor, producer, and rapper, Will Smith suffered from ADHD. He states that he was always the "fun one who had trouble paying attention". He recalls having been an extreme slacker, being a B student while he should have been making A's. Even though he wasn't diagnosed back then, he knows that nowadays the doctors would definitely labeled him with ADHD. Smith remembers having reading problems as a child, not being able to read a book in the span of 2 weeks. As a result of this, Smith buys books for someone to read for him while he listens. Smith never really self-medicated himself besides later expressing himself through acting and rapping.

  17. ADHD(Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a chronic disorder that affects millions of children and often follows them into adulthood. This disorder has symptoms of difficulty keeping focus, hyperactive, and impulsive behavior. Michael Phelps is one of the millions of people that struggle with this disorder. He was diagnosed at the age of 9, his teachers had a hard time getting him to pay attention in class and he was never able to keep still. He was also full of energy, he constantly talked and would ask questions all day. His teachers said that they had a hard time getting Michael to interact during class. He was a very fidgety child and often would touch and nudge other children. His teachers often referred to him as immature. Michael had average grades B’s C’s and a few D’s. Michael was also bullied in school for he was growing so fast the rest of his body couldn’t keep up. By the fifth grade Michael’s doctor diagnosed him with ADHD and put him on Ritalin. Michael would take the drug Monday-Friday no weekends no holidays. Michaels mother knew that the medication would benefit her son in school but she didn’t want it to change who her son was. Michael was medicated for two years before asking his mother to be taken off the medication so he could live a normal life. They consulted with their pediatrician and took Michael off the medication. By this time Michael had found himself to be nationally ranked at the age of ten. Michael would then start to pursue his Olympic dreams. He would go to practices before and after school, this helped Michael to focus more in school because he was able to release all this energy then go to school, then go back out and get rid of all the energy he obtained during the school day. With school Michael would do as he was asked but never more then that, but when it came to swimming homework he wouldn’t skip it for anything, this was the one thing that Michael was able to put all his energy into and he thrived. Looking back now Michael’s mother still cant say if medication was the right move for her son, she says that there was so much going on at the time, a divorce, changing of school districts, and a little boy growing up. But she does know that swimming was the best thing for her son because it was a way for him to prove others wrong and for him to make it though school because he had something to look forward too.

  18. Attention Deficit Hyper Disorder is a condition seen in children that causes them to be unfocused, extremely active, and difficult to handle. Although today we see ADHA everywhere we only see the difficult parts but many famous and successful people have been diagnosed with ADHD and manage to do well for themselves as adults. One of the people that have suffered from ADHD is Bill Gates the richest man in the world and co-founder of Microsoft. As a child Bill was always on the go, questioned everything, and was very disruptive in school. He had such a hard time paying attention he had to drop out of Harvard due to his inability to focus in a classroom setting. He has become something great because even through his condition and the difficulties he faced in his learning he continued to have big goals and dreams which he achieved in becoming the richest man in the world. Although Bill had a hard time in school and getting his education he turned out to be better than anyone ever could have thought. ADHD is not a defeat but as we have seen by Bill and many others such as Albert Einstein, Steven Spielberg and many more ADHD is a challenge but one that can easily be overcome if the person strives to meet the goals and dreams they have set up for themselves.

  19. ADHD, or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, is the most commonly diagnosed mental disorders in children. Robin Williams was diagnosed with ADHD and has quickly become the poster boy for ADHD awareness. He turned his disorder into a positive through drama classes and comedy. His quirkiness and constant talking due to the ADHD made him into the perfect subject for comedy. He knew he had a bright future in the performing arts because he was able to use his spark into a positive through drama. His ADHD gave him an added advantage on the stage because he was able to create a mastered piece of comedy within minutes. However, later in life Williams turned to self medication. He used drugs such as cocaine along with alcohol and found it had the opposite effect on him. He became more calm as the amphetamines rushed into his body. This is the same type of effect Ritalin has as it is also an amphetamine. Today Williams has accepted his disorder for what it is an openly accepts his quirkiness as it gives an added advantage on stage.

  20. Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder or better known as ADHD effects many children all around the world. One celebrity that has it is Jamie Oliver; Jamie was born May 27, 1975 in the UK. Jamie's parents owned a pub in the UK and with spending a lot of time in the kitchen Jamie fell in love with cooking. He was diagnosed as a kid with ADHD because he could never focus in school, and his grades surely showed it. Jamie found that eating healthy foods and not junk food would help him focus better. 21. Adam Levine is the lead singer of the award winning pop band, Maroon 5. He is the primary song writer, lead singer, and one of the guitar players in the band. Levine was diagnosed with ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) when he was a teenager in high school. He could not focus on his school work or even sit down to begin it. Levine had a very difficult time in school, as well as in society, due to his disorder. Levine’s disorder was never really noticeable to his peers at school. He kept his academic struggles fairly private and devised an appropriate medical plan with his doctor, along with the help of his patient and supportive parents. ADHD has affected Levine throughout his adulthood. His creativity is affected now and then when he cannot sit down and concentrate long enough to write a song or complete a track in the studio. With the help of his doctor, Levine is able to manage his disorder and put the focus back on his successful career in music. He was never self medicated with any drug or alcohol.

  22. ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactive disorder is a disorder that causes a problem with inattentiveness and over-activity. My all time favorite actor, Will Smith is diagnosed with ADHD. Will Smith was born and raised in West Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on September 25, 1968. At a young age, Will was a fun, bright kid who everyone liked. He was an average student that had trouble paying attention. He was a little slow in school and was unable to read books in two weeks like most kids did in school. Will was not diagnosed with ADHD until later in life. He was able to use his ADHD to his advantage. When Will was a teenager, he started rapping and became really sucessfull. His rap career led to an acting career when he played a role in The Fresh Prince of Bel-Aire. He was able to use his unique personality to become an amazing actor. Will did not use medication because his acting and rapping helped treat his ADHD. He is now one of the highest paid actors and has starred in many great movies. Will Smith would probably not be where he is today if it weren't for his ADHD.

  23. Ty Pennington is one of the famous celebrities who suffers from an ADHD disorder. He is known for building beautiful houses for the people who need and deserve them most. Ever since he was a child, he was always found getting into trouble, such as jumping off roofs in his neighborhood, and always disrupting the children in his class, sometimes showing off or trying to make them laugh. Pennington says he recalls being disciplined more than he was actually learning at school. Before he was officially diagnosed with ADHD, he was able to graduate high school and enter college. After his first year of college though, he dropped out because it was hard for him to focus in his classes, which is very common for people who have ADHD. It was then when his doctor diagnosed him officially with ADHD and he was able to take stimulants, prescribed by his doctor, which helped his ability to focus and retry college. The stimulants worked and he was able to graduate from the Art Institute of Atlanta with honors. Ty says that during his adulthood once he found out his mental disorder, it was hard for him to believe in himself because he lacked belief in his own abilities. Despite this, he was able to pursue his love for art and design as a carpenter. A major confidence booster to him was when he was offered a chance to host Extreme Maker: Home Edition, soon after he was landed a gig on the children’s show “Trading Spaces” as one of the male carpenters. Even though he struggled with ADHD all his life, saying that he’s “about as ADHD as you can get!...” he was able to combined his photogenic appearance, charismatic sense of humor, and love for carpentry/design into his own empire of television shows, magazine publications, home fashion designs, and personal appearances. Ty now has many loyal fans who have love and respect for not only what he does for a living, but for struggling with a common disorder. This Emmy award-winning home designer is another great example of the amazing things people with attention difficulties can accomplish.

  24. Before the olympics, a commercial came on about Michael Phelps. It was his mother reflecting back to his childhood and speaking on the subject of his attention hyperactive deficit disorder. She said that he was not diagnosed until the age of 9 but the mother noticed it earlier on. When Michael got in to swimming it was the perfect activity for his disorder. As people with ADHD seem to excel in athletics because of their energy. MIchael was known mostly for being to hyper in school. His mother contemplated many time wether or not to give him Ritalin to calm him down. She decided to put him on the drug for years because he was not excelling in class like he was in he pool. Michael could not stay still in class and the other kids would tease him for his disorder and at the fact that he had to leave class to take his pill. When michael was 13 him and his mother decided to ween him off of the pill because swimming was a stronger drug than Ritalin. It was all a mind game to michael as he would say. Over time michael mostly grew out of his disorder because he would swim all day every day non stop. Michael has said to never used a self medication for his problem yet a picture came out in the media about 3 years ago of michael with a bong possibly smoking marijuana. This could show signs that michael still suffers his constant movements and fidgeting from his disorder. Now MIchael Phelps, a man who once suffered or still suffers from ADHD has the most medals in olympic history and shows that anyone with ADHD or other disorders can accomplish anything.
